Welcome friends, family, and internet strangers. “The Breakdown” intends to deliver monthly doses of essential political analysis (mostly content pertaining to current events in so-called Canada, for now), combined with long-form essays on pretty much anything pertaining to the political - pop culture, food, ideas, cats, whatever. Have you ever read a developing news story and wondered, “How should I talk about this at parties?” If so, this newsletter is definitely not for you. If, however, you want a decidedly partisan but fair take on current affairs from a decidedly left-wing perspective, then this newsletter is for you.
Who am I? I am a graduate student, researcher, writer, and teacher with some journalism skills from previous (now extinct) projects. (Journalism is just adept Google sleuthing, right?). I write as a settler on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Musqueum, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (landback!). I’ve been shaped intellectually whilst hanging around community organizers, socialists, academics, and Varsity athletes (a story for another time). I can’t say I’m an expert in any field, but I am convinced that the Left needs as many political analyses from as many angles as possible, and that community journalism is an essential but dying art. My aim here is to produce fresh takes on things that matter to people living in “Canada”, blending academic inquiry with accessible style, contributing to broader conversations about Left strategy in a time of enduring planetary crisis.
If any of this resonates with you, read on! I look forward to conversing with you.
-Liam
